Design Changes @ happeningin.eu: Upper Panel (Diaspora* Alpha Forks)

This post is out-of-date, as happeningin.eu is no longer supported. As Rove has stated: “Due to irrecoverable disagreements with the commercial, for-profit nature of Diaspora Inc., we are dropping the support for Diaspora altogether.” I will leave this post as it is for now, for the curious.

This is just one of many posts to come for happeningin.eu, since there is much to write about this fork. For now, this post will focus on one very small part of it: the upper panel. (To describe everything in detail would take the entire day, that is how much is going on there.)

If you are familiar with Diaspora’s user interface, Figure 1 will be rather foreign to you. This post will briefly describe what is different—though giving it a test spin for yourself is certainly the best way to check it out.

From left to right.

1) The happeningin.eu symbol — This will take you directly to your stream, and appears to be equivalent to clicking on the home symbol (see below).

2) The Find people or #tags box — Unsurprisingly, here you can search for friends and hashtags. Note that when you hover your mouse over the search box, it spins!

3) The Home symbol — This will take you directly to your stream, and appears to be equivalent to clicking on the happeningin.eu symbol (see above).

4) The Notifications symbol — Here you will see all recent notifications, as you would expect. Note the design change for notifications, as in Figure 2.

5) The Mail symbol — Here you can read your mail.

6) The # symbol — This was new to me. Here you see a list of #tags you can read about. I am not sure how this list is compiled (recent hashtags?, trending?), but it exposes you to some #tags you may not have known existed. As the mouseover says: “Hashtags allow you to talk about and follow your interests. They are also a great way to find new people.”

7) Log Out — Here you can log out.
